Hugh’s Blues- Any muso the world over that has graced the sticky carpet of a rehearsal room will have a story to tell about a magical, impromptu jam experienced in the key of E where the planets aligned and the music matched the vibe. Usually these fleeting moments drift off into the ether and the rehearsal continues…it just happened that the tape was rolling as this one went down. What you’re hearing is a spontaneous splurge, captured between takes of Twang Thing. As MO adjusted some settings in the control room (hence his slightly late entry into the party), LG started to noodle around and the boys were swept up in the tide. The resulting track delivers a glimpse of the very reason we enjoy playing in this outfit so much and what makes the band really tick. Listen closely and you can almost see the mindset of each member as the music rises and falls, shifts in mood and as we simply enjoy the sound of us playing together. It’s a fine example of what we sound like behind closed doors. Interestingly, we went straight from this into the version of Twang Thing used on the album….not a bad few minutes of music making all things considered. In reality, this was never intended to be included on the record and we only discovered that it even existed while sorting through takes of Twang Thing but it felt like such an honest document of the band, we had to include it.

The title, Hugh’s Blues, is a dedication to the Rank Outsiders’ No.1 ticket holder and gatekeeper of our spiritual home, Hugh Corrie-Smith. We’re grateful to him for allowing the band to begin and then grow organically at his 70’s style Rock Ranch, for his generosity, for
