The Rank Outsiders are four seasoned musos cobbled together from the Big Smoke of Melbourne, Australia to The Great Ocean Rd. They love nothing more than the sound of vintage guitars played through fine amplification, a little denim…and a smattering of facial hair.
Schooled in the great deeds of acts such as SRV, early ZZ Top, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Clapton, The Allman Bros, Jimi Hendrix, Los Lobos, Georgia Satellites and the original Fleetwood Mac to name a few, the boys deploy a classy trove of tunes at every opportunity.
Experienced beyond the norm, the band boasts a fair pedigree. Luke Gale carved up guitar duties for national touring act, Custom Kings in the early-mid 2000's. The eternally suave, Paul Winstanley, has been the bass player from hot Melbourne bluesy institution, Spoonful, for more than 25 years. Matty Orchard, a working muso from Apollo Bay, has played more than 3000 gigs all over the nation since moving there in 1999 and Adza, the rock solid back beat of the organisation has kept time for coastal stalwarts, Pressed Rat And Warthog, for many years.
Together they serve a refreshing and irresistible sonic spread. Good time, bluesy rock’n’roll, drenched in classic R’n’B roots…delivered with a touch of mongrel.
Real music. Real players. Cool tunes.

In July 2018 The Rank Outsiders assembled at Apollo Bay’s, House Of Rock studios to cut the wax on this collection of bluesy, rootsy, rag-tag rock’n’roll.

On display was a sterling collection of vintage guitars, amps, basses, and drums, all ready to provide the ear candy for the awaiting microphones.

We had hammered these tunes into shape during plenty of late nights in rehearsal rooms and gigs in Victoria’s great South West.

Utilising the greatness of old friend and sound engineer wizard, Mat Gearing-Thomas (MGT), we had him cruise down to the studio prior to the sessions and set up the room, eq’s, compression levels etc.etc. All we had to do was press start and stop on the Protools recorder….and summon the cool vibes.

Eight of these sonic nuggets were recorded with minimal overdubs in two six hour sessions. The other three had been captured as a bass-less three piece (LG, AG & MO) while we searched for the missing ingredient which, thankfully, came along shortly thereafter in the form of The Moggs Creek Menace himself-PW. He supplied that fat, bottom end retrospectively on Shot Down, Legma and Not The Girl Next Door and then, dutifully,…he joined the band!
